Open Sprints: Civic Tech Hackathon is bringing together passionate teams dedicated to building open-source solutions for the public good. Join us in co-creating impactful projects that can drive real change in communities!

This program creates a supportive space where aspiring tech professionals can develop their skills on meaningful civic projects that address real community needs.

  • A Tech Gathering for Social Good. Flex your skills, network with peers, work on open source projects (dataviz, chatbot, research, design and code)

  • Convene with the community. We’re setting up infrastructure to impact citywide change via Equitable Mapping sprint activities

  • Join a coalition of allies. From university students, grassroots teachers, tech workers, to mentors from NY tech orgs. Show your support for BIPOC women and femmes!

We’re looking for civic hackers, designers, developers, researchers and data scientists who are passionate about making a difference through tech. Join us in-person or virtually.

  • Project Highlights: Building for Social Impact

    • Project Great Dane: Dive into New York City's open data through opendata.nyc and collaborate with experts to develop innovative, equitable maps that empower NYC's diverse communities. Existing research work in critical areas such as heat vulnerability index, health impact of air pollution, or community health profile are good examples of data-driven design where using open data can make an impact.

    • Project Husky (Virtual): Over four weeks, work with the UCLA team to develop a Conversational AI aimed at supporting families of children with Autism in Southern California. Through the Bridge Labs project, the team will create technology that directly benefits these families with crucial, user-friendly content.

    • Project Foxhound: Join a team dedicated to researching inclusive hiring practices. Help improve the jobseeker experience by contributing to a one-day workshop aimed at creating more accessible pathways to employment for all.

    Camp Counselor and Organizing Team Role description


    We recruit the organizing team at least 2 months before the event. The team behind Civic Tech Camp is composed of industry mentors, org leaders, and tech leaders who represent a diverse expertise (ie. strategy, research, tech, policymaking, business development). Their main role is to lead the summit experience through planning, designing and driving the many parts of this event.

    As camp counselor, your role is to:

    REVIEW PROJECT PROPOSALS as a Project Manager: You will review submissions, vet final proposals and translate requirements into a work plan that will be posted on the Open Civic Tech docs site.

    HOST PROJECTS as the Cohort Captain: Take on a leadership role in supporting the logistics of the event. Whether that’s helping plan huddle meetings, creating the brief before and after the program. Ensure that each project team will meet with stakeholders, and ensure that projects are on-task and on-time.

    PROVIDE TRAINING as On-The-Day Mentor: Commit to a few hours virtually or in person to assist in technical or strategic aspect of a project. As a mentor, all you need is to lean into what you know, and tap into background and experience.
